Sierra High Route

The Sierra High Route is an off trail version of the John Muir Trail, running from Roads End in Kings Canyon to Twin Lakes, just northeast of Yosemite. The scenery is even better than on the JMT and the route is much, much harder. Solitude, remoteness, and stunning land are the norm for the SHR, which keeps high where the JMT drops low. I did not complete the SHR due to time restrictions and the fact that, although normally a 25 mile a day hiker on something like the JMT, a 12 mile day took about 12 hours due to routefinding and scrambling. I’ve put together a web page about the trip, complete with a lot of long winded, pretentious text, which can be found at

There are many photos to accompany the text, so feel free to skip the words.

Suge, I’m going to check out your link, so I can travel back to the SHR vicariously. It’s no longer within my 4 - wheeled capabilities, but I made excursions from Road’s End in the late 70’s. At those times, almost any backcountry venue was crawling with newbie bP’ers, all of them with guitars :bawling it seemed. It’s not nearly as popular as the JMT but still has its loyal proponents! Thanks in advance for the link!
