For what it’s worth: Last week Bob Rockwell, Sierra mountaineer extraordinaire, talked to Doug and the folks who have operated the Whitney Portal store for years - and are probably more knowledgeable of he Eastern Siera than almost anyone. Doug had planned to open this past weekend ((13 May) but cancelled due to exessive snow in Whitney Portal. New planned opening date is Memorial Day weekend.
Doesn’t seem to be melting very fast. Probably means a zillion mosquitoes into late July.
