Where is the Silers Bald Shelter located. Walked out of Wayah Crest and never found the shelter. Found the trail sign and side trail and walked it for probably a half mile and never found it.

Assuming you were heading south, the trail branches and the left leg (blue blaze) heads down to the shelter then continues back up to the trail. So folks who want to use the shelter do not have to backtrack to get back to the trail. I spent the night in the shelter then got up and headed north. I wasn't paying enough attention and made a complete loop. Before long I came to a shelter I wasn't expecting; Siler Bald shelter! Hey! these guys look familiar! Duh... BTW, after you leave SBS and head north you pass through a layer of garnets before you rejoin the main trail. I never found any huge ones but I bet there are some nice ones there.

I concur with apple on the left leg of the blue blazer. You were almost there when you were descending. Time permitting: Siler Bald is one of my favorite destinations on the Appalachian Trail. So much so that I named my middle son: Siler :)
