How is this shelter? Mount Collins and Double Spring sound like dumps, is it worth it to push on to this one (sobo)?

Silers Bald is a good shelter, and has great views not far from it. They have been improving many of the shelters along the A.T. through the Smokies. Mt. Collins and Double Springs are perfectly decent shelters. Both have great privies too!

I live close to the Smokies and visit this shelter often. It has been upgraded to the new design ( without a fence ) and it is BEFORE Double springs, not after if you are northbound.
Shelter selection is mostly dependent on your mileage, so if you are leaving Derricks Knob Shelter, then Silers is too close, Double springs is just 1.7 miles further so I would reccomand trying to make it to Mt Collins in that case. Mt Collins is .5 miles off the AT, but it has good water, It is NOT a dump, has a nice compost privy and the smell of the nearby Fir trees makes one think its Xmas all year round. This shelter is also a good choice for thruhikers because its close to road access and during the weekends, Trail angels like to set up there ( You may even meet me there )
If you are leaving from Spence Field shelter going Northbound, then I suggest Silers for sure. This gives you a fresh start to pull the uphill to Clingmans dome early.
I hope this helps and for pictures of these shelters go to www.whiteblaze.net, pull up the gallery and look at the pictures. Good Luck and God Speed

My bad, I just noticed you said Southbound, so forget everything I said in the previous post
Sorry about that, oh well maybe it will help someone else.
Coming from Newfound Gap, its a long hard pull uphill to Clingmans Dome, 7.7 miles of it. Then its 2.0 miles to Double Springs and about 1.7 more to Silers. By then your going to be able to do the 11.4 miles to Silers pretty easy, so you may make a good rest stop here and try to go 4.5 miles further to Derricks Knob. This gives you a good start at pulling the climb up to Thunderhead and Rocky Top early in the day, then bust butt to Mollies Ridge.
There now, I hope that helps
