SIX MOONS JUNK - Appalachian Trail

imported

SIX MOONS products are junk! Enough said. If you are thinking about going light in the pack department check out Mountain Laurel Designs. My six moons essence ( I had 2) gave up the ghost every 700 miles. The pack straps actually fell off with loads less than 10lbs! Yet my prophet by Ron Bell at Mountain Laurel has over 2,500 miles of thru hiking on it and it will do 3 times more! Ron makes his products by hand here in the US and stands behind his product (good luck getting SMD to help you out when the essence fails and it will). Prophet to Essence is like Ferrari compared to Ford Fiesta.

Hey Monstro, it sounds like you appreciate quality and endurance, me too. I had two Gregory’s fall apart on me in just 600 miles in 2004. I’d heard and seen ULA on the AT a few times and at the outfitters that knew what they were talking about (MRO & Mountain Crossings). So I switched to the P2 which was the 4000 cubic inch, 2 lb 5 oz pack of 2004. It now has 4,900 miles on it and is whispering to me to go out and hike another couple of thousand miles. ULA now calls it the Catalyst.
So there it is, two cents from a happy customer. ~ Postcard

Ron Moak and I will never agree on his customer service record. But I continue to support his industry. There’s definitely a need for his products, I believe.

I suffer from a common disease called TMB (Too Many Birthdays). My knees and ankles simply can’t carry a base weight over 10#. I would never have been able to experience the sublime pleasures and lessons of a through-hike if it weren’t for the ultra-light industry. Ray Jardine is a hero of mine for getting me out on the PCT with his book and gear. I’m an idiot with a sewing machine, just don’t get it, so companies like SixMoonDesigns are a godsend to me.

Those who push the envelope now may be endangering themselves, granted. But are they perhaps pioneers, like Ray Jardine (and probably Ron Moak) was back when he hit the trail with some new ideas? For that, I thank them.

I limped over the Canadian border in '04 with a 14# load. Three years later, in my 50’s, I finished the CDT painlessly with a 9# load. I really need this stuff.

humm, should I really get into a pissing contest about…

… oh forget it. I think I’m going to go barf in a guide book now, maybe Jardine’s ultralight guide for pioneers.
