Are they out in droves yet, or still under control? Planning to spend a few weeks on the trail between Echo and Sonora starting next week and would like to know what I’m in for. Thanks much.

You & the skeeters have a date. They are thick at Tuolumne Meadows now, and if they have not reached epic proportions yet between Echo and Sonora, they will by the time you arrive. Plan accordingly.

We drove home on HWY 88, East of Carson Pass, where 88 meets 89 on the way to Tahoe and the mosquitoes were smashing against the windsheild like rain with blood spots all over. We were glad we were in the car at this point. Also we were on the trail from Ebbetts Pass that same day going North and there did not seem to be a problem with the pests at this elevation since there was still snow on the trail in a lot of places.

Was up at Carson Pass this weekend. Theres water standing every where and the skeeters are loving it. Ive seen fewer flies in a horse barn. Bring the deet, long sleves, headnet, etc. And perhaps a spare pint of blood, you may need it!

just spent 4 days (7/1 - 7/4) between Emerald bay trail and Echo lake and didn’t have any problems. They were out for half an hour at dawn and dusk but else wise they were under control. of course they could be out in in masses at any time but if you’ve ever been under 24 hour code red attack mode you will not even notice them. happy hiking!

I just spent the weekend at Carson Pass/Echo Lake and actually the mosquitoes weren’t that bad - except at the spots where there is patchy melting snow (such as PCT five miles north of the Echo Lake chalet, a mile before Lake Aloha).
