Skippy PB packets

I’m reluctant to start a new thread on peanut butter, but I couldn’t find any previous posts to tack onto. I bought some Skippy peanut butter PACKETS for my maildrops - maybe they haven’t been discovered by hikers yet??? They come in a box of six; 0.9 oz each packet (enough for two bagel halves). Available in plain or chocolate flavored at Albertson’s down here in Florida. About $2-2.50 per box. Sure beats carrying a jar of PB, then running out of bagels to put it on. I could only find them at one certain store in the area. Save yourself some hassle and call around first before you go out to get some. Photo at TrailJournals. Jeez I hope you guys don’t kickmyass for posting something so stoopid.

One reason I didn’t buy them is the excessive packaging involved.
The other reason is that I’d rather have one toothpaste sized
tube of 6-10 ozs.
I heard they are coming out with a 9 oz. tube. This would be
ideal for hikers.":boy"

We just saw both the package of little tubes and a bigger tube in a local market in California today. Didn’t check the weights, but the bigger tube had to be the 9 ounce tube. The tube seemed pretty strong - able to handle backpacking. Wish I had checked the weight and price.

I just bought a 9 oz. tube of p-nut butter today.
It was $2.69 at ACME (Albertson). (compare to an 18 oz. jar
for $2.69)
The tube is like a large suntan lotion tube. The opening is
about the size of a quarter, so refilling it should be easy.

The convenience and ‘right’ weight for hikers makes it worthwhile.

Campmor lists a refillable food tube for $2.95 for 2, + S&H. Don’t know if these are any good, but another option. Haven’t seen the Skippy thingies in N.E. But, can someone help me with why the original plastic jars aren’t OK? They can’t be that much heavier than the tubes, are fairly durable, and come already filled with peanut butter.

Thanks.

I’d go with buying the jar. According to your figures, you get twice as much peanut butter in a jar than a tube for only another 30 cents. If you’ve got a tight budget . . . go with the jar of pb. The only thing I plan to squeeze out of a tube on my future thru-hike (04?) is toothpaste. Oh, and Gulden’s mustard. And strawberry preserves. But NOT PEANUT BUTTER!!! That’s why god invented spoons.
