Has anyone seen for sale a smell proof zip lock? Thought I had read about this some years ago.

Nothing is smell proof to a bear or rodent…

On my thru hike last year I just doubled up regular sandwich baggies with great results. Never had one break on me and my food stayed dry while I enjoyed the light weight and low price.

Riiight… I know what your asking… Just double bag it… Get a full jar of peanut butter, scoop out half the jar, bury your “Smell proof” baggies in the jar and put back as much peanut butter as possible. Put it in your food drop boxes along with your other food items… as well as a little bit of coffee, maybe even a moth ball… Be safe.

Ursack (at least used to) sells (supposedly) smell-proof large ziplocs as a package of 3. These are the same that you’re supposed to use in the Ursack.

The Ursack liner is the same as the OP sacks sold elsewhere (you can also find them at Watchful Eye and Backpacking Light). While one of those did pass the smell test (at home) with my dog, I doubt it would pass the test with a hungry bear, whose sense of smell is even stronger. That’s especially true after you’ve been taking food in and out of the OP sack for several days and your hands have transferred some of the odor from the food packages to the outside surface of the OP sack. OP sacks are definitely not a substitute for hanging your food or using some other type of protection such as an Ursack.

…and it is NOT necessary to use a 5lb jar of PB to ship 7g of smell-proof bag, but it IS funny.:smokin

I used the smell proof ziplocs during my thru-hike. I’m sure that they were smell proof for a few weeks - but they got punctured/generally worn very quickly and definitely weren’t smell-proof anymore!
