Smokies shuttles

My girlfriend and I have planned an October weekend hike that would take us from Newfound Gap over the AT to Davenport Gap. If possible, we’d like to avoid taking two vehicles (leaving one at Newfound Gap and the other at the Big Creek Ranger Station) and we were thinking that we’d rather, if at all feasible, arrange a shuttle. We have already contacted a well-known “hiker store” in Gatlinburg and agreed that what they quoted was a little out of our budgets. So we were wondering what was out there as far as shuttles to/from out points were concerned and what would constitute a “fair” price? Any ideas or suggestions would be a great help!

Thanks!!!

I sure don’t know but did you consider hitching?

I would be all for it-- but I’d be doing it alone, if you know what I mean…

How about Jeff and Nancy Hoch at the Hike Inn? They would park your car as well. Their place is on the road to Fontana Dam. 828-479-3677.

Most shuttlers charge around $1.00/mile.

Try the people at Standing Bear Farm. They are just east of Davenport Gap. They have a safe place to park and will shuttle you to Newfound Gap. Very nice people. I did a section hike through there 2 weeks ago and really enjoyed their place. http://standingbearfarm.tripod.com/
Check out their web site. I don’t know how much the shuttle would be, but, yes it usually runs about $1.00per mile for up to two people. Great time of year up there. Have fun. Hikerman.

Hey, both Jeff and Nancy Hoch of the Hike Inn and also Curtis of Standing Bear are great, great people.

I would recomend Standing Bear for this shuttle only because I think it will/would save you money seeing as Standing Bear is almost in Davenport Gap and Fontana (The Hike Inn) is on the opposite end of the Smokies.

Also I am pretty sure hitching is illegal in TN, but do your thing.

That is my favorite section of the Smokies, I hope you have clear skies. The Bunion is awesome.

Today I reserved shelters for the same hike but I am doing Wed-Sat. You better hurry though because spaces are going quick. Either that or camp and hope that you don’t get caught.

My wife and I used All Park Taxi (865-908-0911) to shuttle us from Davenport - Newfound gap. It was the least expensive shuttle I found. I believe it was about $70, but he arrived really late… it was about 2 hours late. He said he got lost. So he gave it to us for $45. Overall all the service was okay, he drove about 10 mph under the speed limit and he kept having to refer to maps. He apologized and said he was new to the area. If I had to do it again I would probably use his shuttle service.
