Snakes and kit - Appalachian Trail

Does anybody personally know someone who got bit by a rattlesnake on the AT? Also what is the most important item in a snakebite kit?

I’ve seen about 10 rattlesnakes on the AT. I carry no snake bite kit. I do suggest not wearing head phones while hiking. The rattlesnakes which were agitated by my presence, all gave loud enough warning. One snake was so content in the sun on the trail, myself and 2 others just stepped over it and continued hiking. We figured it had just eaten and was satisfied to just lay across the trail.

I’m sure that has happened but it’s not made it to the social media sites like this one. It is quite rare for hikers to be bit. I have read about some close calls as Steamer has indicated a “zoned hiker” paying no attention to his feet or distracted by headphones. Down here in Florida the biggest contributing factor is “who swung the canoe paddle firs?”. Stupid people will see a snake and then try to interact with it for no reason or to make it move for a better photo only to be shocked by it speed. Even with both inattention and stupidity actual incidents of AT hikers being bit by a snake are as rare as bear attacks. I don’t own a snakebite kit. If I get bit I will go to town and visit the hospital. The animal to fear on the AT. Mosquitoes

Thanks . I am not bringing headphones. Am also ready for the mosquitoes. (bug net sewed into my baseball cap, deet, and I run cold so don’t mind putting on cloths to keep bugs out).
GOOD LUCK TO THE CLASS OF 2016

One important item not mentioned in the discussion so far - it’s not just where you put your feet. Be careful reaching into places where snakes might reside - rocks, logs, stumps, etc.

Snake bite kits are extra weight and not recommended for bites where I live. (Oklahoma) I have been bit but a dry bite. If bitten do not put a tourniquet on the arm or leg. You compartmentalize the poison and can lose the limb. Happened here in February! Watch for swelling and make your way to a road. Better to be bit by a large rattler than a small one. Babies use all their venom while an older snake just wants you gone!(dry bite) Boomer
