Sneaky ass lame thruhikers

I love thruhikers… I take good care of thruhikers. I cook them good food, I provide a cheap ass hostel, and the company I give them rocks… BUT. When you come walking up the hill and start a conversation by asking me what I can hook you up with for free it is irratating…I walk away… THEN you sneak upstairs in the lodge and take a shower for free and leave your filthy ass mess for me to clean up you really take advantage of an otherwise wonderful expirance… you got tossed too… Dont get me wrong. I know your dirty, I know your sore. but just ask damnit… you get more flies with sugar then you do being a damn sneaky ass. YOU make it diffucult for the next hiker(s) who may actually be honest and true… like i said I love thruhikers… just not sneaky ass lame ones…

Give’m hell, hemptress. Anyone in this community that would do that deserves complete banishment, until they come through with a public apology and a sizeable donation to cover much more than your fiscal costs. Fortunately for both of us they are the exception.

Hey. Sorry about the spelling… but. really now… This week alone… I have: Picked up a hiker with a busted hand (hombrew)from the er, drove 3 down to EMS to get some new shoes… drove one back down to cheshire where he was soooo happy about scoring icecream he forgot his wallet, and took one out and about to lunch with me on a rainy ass day… like I said. I like thruhikers… I admire your journey… but. Morons like this make me a little weary… this cats tried to make me feel like I OWED them something cuz they were thruhiking… I thought “yogi” **** was suppose to be kinda stealth??? not point blank… can you give me free ****??? My door is always open to you… trust me. Ill do anything for someone who is in need… not just freaking whining about being broke and hungry… see??? hmm. maybe if THEY cant afford to hike the AT they should get a damn job.

I can understand how you would feel from the experience you are describing. I have heard it said in other locations and times that thru-hikers are starting to expect trail magic and freebies. I say even if they have no money, if they have the strength and perseverance to thru-hike, they need to have personal honesty and integrity enough to ask if they can work for whatever they are needing. Also bearing in mind, that if they cannot pay for the services, the hostel owner may not be able to remain open indefinitely. I’m thinking of Rusty’s Hard time hollow. Although I didn’t stay the night, I more than paid for the services I used.

Yuck !! There is NO excuse for anyone to do that to you. They give us all a bad name. I , for one, am entirely grateful for the unreal generosity I see out there. You people are amazing…and have brought me to weary tears a time or 2. Anyone who takes advantage of it is a shallow, egotistical Dillweed…

I have never been to a place on the trail that was so un-friendly as Rusty’s HardTime Hollow. I guess maybe past thru hikers have burned him up. I dont know, but maybe its time to close all the hostels and let hikers do a real thru hike. Further more, some of these hostel owners are out for themselves, and deserve what they get. Uncle Jonny for one. Pick one someone’s spelling, how low life can u get. Frinken slobs. And I spelled that wrong.

I found the trail was a microcosm of the world. You take the good with the bad. Class is something that can’t be ordered at an outfitter with your hiking boots, and stripped of most of our worldly possessions while hiking the trail, it’s a lot easier to see a damaged soul when it doesn’t have a three piece suit or a cubicle to hide in. Hemptress71, keep the faith, and keep shining on the trail I truly believe that what you do will come back to you in ways that will amaze. I hope I spelled everything right. Peace

If ya want hostel free trails then head West. There are a FEW on the Pct and I am not sure if there is even 1 on the CDT. The hostels on the AT… for the most part are fantastic. I am not too into hostels cuz I don’t get much rest in them these days…but hotels are $$ so lots of folks use the hostels, obviously. I surely hope the there aren’t any hikers that actually think that these folks are just doing this for " free " ! of course they are trying to make money !..Everything has changed on the AT…but you can still hike your own hike and just camp…don’t rip anyone off !

Hemptress, I hope you stick with it. In a few years if you’re still around(open), when I do the AT again, I’ll spend a few days at your place and help you with whatever needs to be done.
I also don’t expect services like yours to be on or near the trail. It’s just nice that they are.
Beeman-I’m sorry but I don’t agree with you. If a hiker is out on the trail with no money, no food, and no proper equipment, then they will mooch off others any way they can, even if it means sneaking into a hostel just to take a shower.
Hempstress, stick with it and I’ll see you in a few years.

Dear Hemptress,

Where exactly is your hostel located?

Thanks.

Close all the hostels, and the “sneaky lame ass thru hikers” will disappear. Its that simple.

Give a hiker a hand up. Not a hand out!

feed a hiker one day
or teach a hiker to yogi - and he (or she) can yogi for a lifetime!

You can take a hiker off the trail but you cant wash the trail off the hiker!

1/4 of the way

In some ways I have to agree with Hunters main point. I was somewhay appalled at the number of “hikers” on the trail to Damascus whose main activity seemd not to be hiking but mooching off people and taking endless zero days in town. Their numbers seeemd to drop off dramatially after trail days but I would still see a few “hikers” folowing the main knot of thruhiker up the trail, yellow blazing the entire way.

There seems to be a strange relationship between these hikers and some folks in the trail community who seem to enjoy enabling them. At this point I don’t see a huge problem. Generally speaking, their activity doesnt really hurt anyone. I can see that after awhile though that the true hiking community (i.e. those who actually enjoy HIKING)
will suffer as the the trail is overrun by these Trail Heads
(like the deadh heads except instead of following the Dead, they follow the thru hiking tour). “Hiking the AT” will soon become a euphemism for spending a summer partying up the AT circuit.:cheers
