I think it is all totally do-able now, but there are still broken snowfields above 12,000’ throughout the San Juans. A typical situation is to walk on clear trail then hit short sections of steep, snowy sidehill with sharp rocks below. It would probably make more sense to carry a light backpacking style ice axe and minispikes than snowshoes. Plus some full gaiters for postholing in soft snow. A ice axe is worthless and can be hazardous if you don’t know how to use it. You should figure out how to self arrest on some easy snow before you put yourself into anything difficult.
