Snow in NEw England

I was wondering if anyone has been on the trails in the WHites, Greens or Mahoosucs recently and could tell me how much snow is up there. I’m thinking of heading out this weekend and assume I need snowshoes. Might be a bit too cold for an overnight!

Anyone got any cool non-AT spots/trails?

thanks

Hey A-Train…

Ever take the ferry to NY at Grande Isle and go over to the High Peaks? Some nice snowshoeing over there south of Lake Placid. Trailheads from Adirondack Loj to Heart Lake and on toward Mts. Marcy and Algonquin. Keene Valley is nice, too. Giant Mountain is tops on a nice clear day in winter–a nice day climb/hike. Lots of nice little peaks over there across Lake Champlain. Goldberries restaurant in Placid does a Monte Cristo sandwich to kill for. And on the way back be sure not to miss the cultural mecca of Plattsburgh. (Uh, riiiight.) … my old stomping grounds before I got beached here in virginia…sigh.

Was hiking in the Presidentials last weekend and did not need snoeshoes. The trails as usaul were completely packed down and most were very icy. Crampons were a must in places particularly down low and above treeline. Also cold and windy but the views were magnificent.

Views from the Top has user-submitted trail conditions for the northeast states. It might also give you an idea of a trail to go shoeing on.

Hey A-Train,

We’re expecting a storm this way on sunday, we’ve been told it will dump 10" or so where we are, on the coast, about an hour east of the notch. More expected inland and up in the mountains. There’s probably quite an accumilation already after the recent storms, we’ve still got about 12" way down near the sea.
Hope that helps.

consider hiking into Zealand hut or Carter Notch hut where you can warm up next to the woodstove in the evening. But the bunk rooms are unheated, so make sure you’ve got a warm sleeping bag. Call the AMC to find out about availability. Enjoy!

A-Train, I hope you didn’t make it out this weekend. NASTY out there…in excess of 12-15+ inches in lower elevations, so needless to say…hiking it the mountains just might suck a WEE bit. If you did go, be sure to post when you get back and give us all a heads up.

                        Take care,
                               -Sprocket;)

Thanks for all the help guys!

I did make it out despite temps in the negative teens here in Vermont (before windchill). No, NOT an overnight, but a dayhike on the Long Trail from Bolton Notch Road south towards Duck Brook SHelter and back. About 3-4 inches of powder on the trail with ice sheets underneath. Made for a tiring day without snow shoes/pole/crampons and my feet were very cold and wet as I made the mistake of using mesh trail runners (haha yeah you can laugh).
Anyway a beautiful peaceful day. Nothing like a good winter hike.

Dharma-thanks for the link to that site, its very cool!
