You be surprised though with all the warnings how many people show up on March 1st at Springer expecting the weather to be like Atlanta in March. Not only it is about 15-20 degrees cooler on average, it also gets much more rain/sleet/snow. The Smokies have some of the highest rainfall amounts in the United States. I think it catches the unprepared off guard to say the least. But if they make it a week, they get a quick education and get a second chance to regear at US 19. That is, if they don’t drop out by then.

Gatlinburg

I prefer to use gatlinburg over atlanta for when i forcast mountain temps for Springer. Tho Gatlinburg is more likely to be cooler than Springer on any given day, the chances of being prepared for cold is better than sub tropic temps of Hotlanta.

Sometime next week I’ll be hiking from Newfound Gap to Fontana, maybe going on to Franklin NC. I WANT TO GET SOME SNOW!!! And it pisses me off that I’m not there right now.

What are my chances of getting some snow in the smokies while I’m there (approx. Feb. 18-25)?

Hey, OT is ahead of plan and rolled into Fontana today. He may take Sunday off at the Hike Inn. If not he will be rolling into the park Sunday.

Last April the 7th my partner and I hiked out of Hot Springs.2nd day out, we ran into snow.In 2000 on the 22nd of April woke up in the shelter at Pecks Corner, after one of the worst ice storms I’ve ever seen.Soooo, you should expect it on the southern parts of the AT at higher snow levels. No matter what part of Spring.:boy

looks like they just got hit yesterday. In March 01 I had the opportunity to attend a Food show in Gatlinburg TN. This is a trade show where a vendor(US Foods) shows off all there new and old items available to restaurants and food service business. Anyway I drove to Hike Inn and had Jeff and Nancy shuttle my car to newfound gap. I hike from Fontana toward Newfound. 3rd day out huge storm comes. I made it down some side trail to another road and got into town. The road up to new found was closed for 2 days. I couldnt get my car. Point of the story: If its snowing , keep in mind there might not be anyone at Newfound Gap, because the road is closed. Do not automatically consider that a safe out.

March 13, 14,15 of 1993, it snowed 30 plus inches in the smokies at LOWER elevations. There was more snow at higher elevations that went unmeasured. There where dozens of hikers trapped and missing for days, but luckily, no one died on the trail to my knowledge, though several people died due to wrecks, fallen trees and heart attacks and such. That was an extreme, the blizzard of the century. But you can get snow in the high smokies around newfound gap any month of the year except june, july and august. It can rain in the smokies and snow at the beach, as it did the last two years. The weather is VERY unpredictable in the southern appalachians.
