Snow - Pacific Crest Trail

I have been reading a lot of posts here and on the pct-l about snow levels in the earlier mtn. ranges. I have no problem with carrying an ice axe if it is really necessary. I am not trying to be cavalier, but can someone give me an objective analysis of the amount of exposure we are going to face and whether it is worth the stress and impending back ache. I feel like everyone is freaking out and the postings are feeding off each other. Another thing, if the “chutes” are steep, icey and exposed with no safe run-out, unless you truly know how to use your ice-axe, you probably aren’t going to be able to stop yourself. Poles will give you more stability/balance. Also, if you have never used crampons, exposed snow slopes are not the place to learn. You will just trip on them wich increases the risk. I am interested in everyone’s thoughts.

One problem will be route finding. A lot of the PCT on the sides of the mtns might be hard to find.

And more importantly - It ain’t just the snow - it’s the streams.
