Snow Report - John Muir Trail

I leave for a JMT hike on Saturday and was concerned with snow in the high passes. Is it just about gone now? If not, will I have problems crossing the snow or being able to tell where the trail goes? Any advice would be appreciated. I am from NH so I have experiance traveling on snow here but need to know what to expect on the left coast.

I just came out of the mountains today. What i saw in the northern part of the JMT is that there is still plenty of snow but it is all well-tracked and not really a problem. Even though the southern passes are higher, that area got less snow, so i’d expect conditions to be similar to the northern part. The one area that might still be holding a ton of snow is the Muir Pass area, but even there i’d expect tracks.

The bugs are starting to hatch, so you’ll want to probably plan to camp high and away from lakes most of the time.

I am with a group 6 leaving on the JMT from Tuolumne M on Sept 10 heading south. We are taking 20 days to Mt Whitney. Any suggestions on resupplying. I’m hope the bugs will be gone by then.

DennisT, We are resupplying at Red’s Meadow and Vermillion Valley Ranch by going to the stores for resupply and then have a big food drop sent to Muir Trail Ranch. That allows us to carry only three days of food for the first half of the hike and once we get our trail legs we come out of MTR with eight days of food.
