Does anyone have recent info on the snow level from Stoney Pass to Durango? My questions specifically are:
is the trail snow free?
is navigation with only maps possible or is gps needed due to snowpack?
thanks

Trail is definitely NOT snow free. I think it’s do-able, though. Might be a big glissade from the divide into Elk Creek. Take an iceaxe. Snowy areas will be the aforementioned drop into Elk Creek, Rolling Pass, Blackhawk Pass, and the part of Seg 28 down from Sliderock to Champion Venture Mine road. Hit those areas early to avoid postholing or late if you like the extra security of being anchored via a posthole.
It’s melting fast. 90+ in Durango tomorrow.
