SOBO: Getting to the Northern Terminus

imported
#1

I live in Boston. I’m hiking the whole trail southbound starting October 12th. My problem has been determining how to get to the northern terminus of the trail. It seems that, aside from cabs, the nearest I can get there via public transportation is either Montpelier or St. Albans.

So far my plan is to take a bus from Boston to Montpelier, then a cab the 60+ miles the rest of the way. But that cab is going to cost a bunch, no doubt. Anyone know of a better way?

I would think that october 12 may be a little late if I am reading it right. Dont under estement the whites.

I won’t be in the Whites. I’ll be in the Green Mountains. Vermont

You are right that it IS a bit late but I don’t have much choice. I’m running the Chicago Marathon on Oct 9th and I can’t do it before then.

There are shuttle services. On alpinezone.com, the owners of Rose Apple Acres Farm posted on a thread about shuttling - and let people know that for a fee they offer shuttles (and safe parking) to and from the trail and some key transit points. I have no direct experience with them

Rose Apple Acres Farm are great folks! Don’t even bother looking elsewhere. In 2003, they provided me a place to stay, a drive back into town for dinner, and a shuttle to the nearest bus stop (sorry I don’t remember the town name). I recommend them highly if they are still in the hiker-hostel business. Call them and they will tell you everything you need to know about getting to the northern terminus.

Hitchhiking in vermont is surprisingly easy thanks to the loads of hippies and hikers who will be happy to give a hiker a ride (especialy on a weekend). It took me just a few hours to hitch from sherborn pass to the northen LT 3 years ago along road 100. Carry a sign “Northen terminus - Long trail” and make sure any bus you take will drop You at road 100 and not in montpelier, as its impossible (and probebly ilegal) to hitch on an Interstate to road 100.

Good luck

Since a couple of you mentioned our name, and we just had a hiker tell us ofthis site, I thought I’d let you know that Rose Apple Acres Farm continues to provide hiker services. More info at www.roseappleacres.com . Just to let you all know, as of August 05, there is still no public transport in or out of the northern terminus area. We can get you to Burlington or Waterbury. Think about hiking with a friend and having a car at each end. Good luck.
