SoBo Maine question

I am giving some thought to starting a south bound hike from Maine this year. Those of you up there – how are the flies this year? Given the amount of snow and rain fall this winter and spring, what is local thought on when they will start and how bad they will be? How far south on the trail do you have to get before you get out of their territory?

Thanks,

I was hiking in the Whites this weekend and the black flies are just getting organized. I don’t know if others have noticed but the first week or so they hatch they just swarm around and don’t bite much. The mosquitos are also out in unusual numbers for so early in the year. Be aware though that this is in NH, Maine has a much higher black fly population. I imagine that this will be a banner year.
