SOBO PCT Thru-Hike

I am getting that hiking itch again, and I am graduating college in mid-May, and am taking the LSAT on June 15. After that, I am free. I am thinking about a SOBO PCT hike. Karen Berger’s book spoke of snow in the cascades in June, and no water in the desert during the fall. Does anyone have any more information for me?

Only a couple people attempt a sobo PCT hike each year. In 2003, there were 2 sobos. The best place to ask about this is PCT-L. My first instinct is that you could flip-flop. Maybe start at Kennedy Meadows immediately after your LSAT, walk to Canada, then flip back to KM to walk south.

Hi, we hiked 1000 south in 2003 and it was totally different then our Nb hike in 96. I really enjoyed the solitude and the feeling of going against the grain. If our dog wasn’t having such a tuff time we would have kept going. We had alot of snow in N wash in July. be prepared. I have heard that it hasn’t been a great snow year there this year. We had most of it after Stehekin( some before ) and it only lasted about 60 miles or so. I will be working in Stehekin this year so stop by and say hi !..

hey,

I am going to attempt a south bound hike this year w/ my buddie. We are starting july 1st at manning park. There are a lot of issues this year with this hike such as snow, washed out bridges, detours, no water the last 1/4 of the trail, cold as shit in the sierras. Yea should be fun! Let me know if you are serious about this.:cheers

I hear it’s pretty hard to do this, snow’s very deep until midsummer and no water down south later in the year.

I hear that SOBO is rather doable if you start in Canada around July or August and plan to be in SoCal towards the end of October. You just have to watch the weather in the Sierras, snow that late is always possable. However, you have the entire trail to your self from September on. Water could be a problem for sure, but you can plan for that.

Wonder how water will be this year, considering precipitation levels.
