We went northbound, Newfound Gap to Davenport Gap, last weekend (9/15 to 9/17). We encountered 10 to 15 southbounders during that interval. Two of these were a father/son going from Davenport to Fontana Dam. The rest were heading for Springer, including two women from Australia and one young man who, when asked where he was from, answered, "Mars." No, really, where are you from? "Really, Mars."
Traffic wasn’t very heavy.

You see....it's hikers like that resident from Mars that gives sobos a bad name. He was most likely just another directionally challenged nobo that's spent all summer partying. ;)
It’s still a little early for most sobos to be in the Smokies.

…thanks…I did a 3 day/35 miler over labor day on the north side of Hot Springs and only saw a handful of folks…I knew then it was too early for SOBO thru’s but thought I could run into a pack on the fast track in the Smoky’s next week…thanks for the reply’s…peace…

We just finished thru-hike nobo and the sobos we met should be no further than harpers ferry or somewhere in PA. Most should finish Nov or Dec.

Hiked AT at Roan Mtn 9/16. No SOBOs. I visited My son and wife (Crazy Birds) on the Trail in Glascow VA on Sunday. Large group (20) of SOBOs two days behind him. There are 3 in his group now and has been passed by 6 since they flip flopped at Harpers Ferry 3 weeks ago. Its gonna be a long time before they get to the GSMP.

thanks all...I was thinking about leaving the tent at home, since I'll be on the trail during the week, but didn't want to take up shelter space if there was an abundance of thru hikers....so just to be on the safe side, I'll carry the tent and maybe use it as a pillow...thanks for the replies...
