SoCal in March - Pacific Crest Trail

I’m hoping to hike the PCT this year, but can’t start until June 1st. It would be possible, however, for me to take a few weeks off in March to start the trail, then come back from where I left off in June and continue north.

My question is whether or not it is possible to hike the first 300 or so miles from Campo north in March. Would snow make this impossible? I’m not really clear on what kind of conditions I would face in this section in March, any information would be great.

Thanks!

The desert is in good shape right now but the San Jacintos have snow. We took 12hrs. to cover 16mi. last week. Ice and snow above 7000ft. 3ft. deep on the north sides. Crampons a must! I’m not sure if the winter is over up there. We usually get late season storms. Watch the weather for our area.

Funnybone! started the trail last year on March 24th. Read all about it…

I think you should be fine ( although cold ) till about the Pines to Palms Hwy. (about mile 150) and then expect a lot of snow on the San Jacinto range. Any way you cut it, I would NOT recomend starting your hike from the border on June 1st.

Hi Sunshine Tick! Yes, it can be done, and you picked a good year to do it, with the warmer, drier winter in CA. I’m leaving in March too, so feel free to email me if you’d like to chat.
