Socal snow update

No surprises here.

As of April 15, there is still a $hit of snow and ice in the San Jacintos heading out of idylwild. My hiking partner and I are flipping to walker pass and are going to head south and do the heat before its bad and hopefully the snow will decrease significantly in 2-3 weeks. We ran into one-gallon on April 14 who hiked south from Agua Dulce and he laughed when we asked if he could find the trail. He was hiking forest service roads/ highways to bypass all the snow/ice. He laughed even louder when I asked if he thought if would be better in a couple of weeks!

Ice axe and crampons 100% necessary according to local rangers and outfitter if you plan on hiking the pct through the jacintos. But dont worry there’s 50% more precip in the San Gabriels

But we’ve had a blast so far and will hike wherever we can!

we were in the Santa Anas last weekend and there’s a spot with a mind-blowing panorama of the Jacintos, Bernardinos & Gabriels. all of them still looked pretty impressively white (esp San Gorgonio, which was SOLID white) and we wondered if anybody was already out in them on the PCT. still, weather here in the valleys has been WARM and hopefully that bodes well for this year’s gang of thrus. good luck!
