Songs relating to AT

Ok…so here’s a question that probably hasn’t been asked on this site yet. I’m trying to put together a CD for me and my buddy (who is also hiking the AT with me next year) and any other friends or family who want a copy. A sort of Appalachian Trail soundtrack to keep the excitment fresh and get some of our loved ones excited as well. Can anyone think of any songs that could be connected in some way to the AT? I especially want at least one song for each state, but it could also be a song mentioning a town or river or mountain or range or vally or whatever.
Any help would be appreciated, and don’t worry. Thanks!

For example… Right now i have “Country Road” by John Denver (West Virginia). “Tennessee” by Arrested Development (although i’m hoping to find a better song for this one). “New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra (but open for any suggestions). And “Georgia on my mind” by Louis Armstrong. Thanks for any help

Hey C-Giddy, great topic! A while back I posed a question in a similar vein: theme music.

One of my favorite songs is “Maryland I’m Coming Home” by Vonda Shepard.

Check out the Yonder Mountain String Bands number called 40 Miles From Denver. “…I’d be 40 miles from Denver when you woke up all alone, Id be 40 miles from Denver and 3 days from my home. In that cool mountain air on the Appalachian Trail, life is better there.” Great song, great band.

“Rocky Top” the Tennessee Vols fight song and an official song of TN. And you’re right, you do walk over the top of it. Flame and I would sing an old spiritual “Walking Down Heaven’s Road.” Did any one mention Willy Nelson’s “I just can’t wait to get On The Road Again.” We heard lots of people singing it with the word Trail substituted for Road.

‘RE . . . SPECT . . . WALK’

Whaddya say?

Other Kineo Kid flavored tunes for my own personal thru-hike CD (sort of like desert island tracks)

Outlaw Torn - Metallica

Another Day - Dream Theater

Learning To Fly - Pink Floyd

Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits

Wanted Dead Or Alive - Bon Jovi

And I could go on and on. The Braveheart soundtrack is very inspiring (in the opening scene, a piece of music plays while the camera zooms in on some fantastic mountainous scenery). And just for giggles, Joe’s Garage.

But I also like listening to birds, bees, wind, creaking trees, thunder, and the utter silence of falling snow. Pantera ain’t got nothing on ol mother nature.

is “In the Pines.” Most recently made famous by Nivana’s adaptation in their song “Where Did You Sleep Last Night.” A very good article on the orgins and various versions of this song is at http://www14.brinkster.com/zzubevol/WDSLN.html

Nirvana’s version goes:
“My girl, my girl,
where did you go,
I am going where the cold wind blows,
In the pines, in the pines,
where the sun don’t ever shine,
I will shiver the whole night through …”
in the pines,
