Can anyone provide information about the South Meadows campground in the Adirondack High Peaks? Are they free? First come first serve? Any other information would be helpful for planning, too. Thanks.

VFTT – Views from the top – has several forums used by many hikers who frequent the Adirondack Mountains and the White Mountains. You’ll likely get a better response if you post your question there. I have not stayed at that campground.

Yes, the south meadows road campsites are free and yes they are first come first serve. Since its tecnically in the high peaks area the rules about no fires and all dogs must be leashed apply there as well.
If your heading down route 73 from either lake Placid or Keene, turn down the Loj road (just look for the open field with the tremendous view of the high peaks!)South meadows road is the dirt road that intersects from right, about 3 miles down the Loj road. Camping areas are scattered along the road. You need to look for the official “Camp Here” markers. If you miss the turn you’ll end up at the Adirondack Mountain Club(ADK),which just so happens to be a great place for hiking, camping and trail info.
If you need more info I’d be happy to help or you can contact the ADK (www.adk.org).

The view from 73 just before the turn off to the Loj is one of my favorite views from the road…
The other is up on 86 before turning off to the airport at Donnelley’s Ice Cream shop.
