South rim shuttle

I’m going to be in the Grand Canyon in March for some fun on the Tonto. In previous years, I thought I saw park buses that ran between the village and Desert View. But, I can find no info on them. Was I just imagining them? I’d planning on hiking down the Hermit and then over to New Hance and up. Problem is, there will be only 1 vehicle, and it will be back at the village. Hitching shouldn’t be too hard from Moran point, which is close by.

But, does anyone know of a shuttle along the South Rim road? Did I just make this up?

Check the NPS site on planning your trip. They do run shuttles to the Hermit Rest and the S. Kaibab Trail head and to the various stops in the Village area. At least they did last year. I checked their site a moment ago and it looks like you may need to check with Grand Canyon Lodges concerning transportation to Desert View. Have fun.

Well you might not be “making it up” i have been to the canyon a lot and the only way to the New Hance was by taxi. In the summer when the shuttle bus runs to the north rim that might provide a service to HNT but not in March.
BTW
The road out to Hermits rest is being redone and i understand some ride out to there is being done but anyone coming back out the hermit will have to walk back to the BA lodge.
I will also be there in March for a couple of weeks so maby we can see whats what with my own transportation to help you. Get back to me off line in a few weeks when i know what i am doing in march. I have 3 weeks of hiking in feb. first up…

Xanterra runs tour buses out to Desert View everyday, but this is a tour with the driver/guide making set stops. I have never heard of those buses being used by hikers. For more information about guided bus tours on the South Rim, contact Xanterra at 928-638-2631.

This summer (not in March), while the Hermit Road is under construction, the Park will provide a shuttle to Desert View, but the Hance Trail is not near any stops.

On April 1, the Hermit Road will close beyond Mohave Point (about half way along the road). No pedestrian traffic will be allowed past that point on the road or on the rim trail. For April and May, the only hiker access to the Hermit Trail will be via two early morining shuttles from the Backcountry Information Center for those with backcountry permits (no day hikers). No hikers can exit the canyon using the Hermit Trail.

On July 7, the entire Hermit Road will close until Nov. 1. There might be a shuttle to take hikers to the Waldron Trailhead, but the details are not finalized. No pedestrian traffic near the road or rim trail will be allowed past the 1st overlook (Trail View Overlook).
