trying to figure what kind of clothing i will need for a Southbound thru-hike starting in August. I have no idea how cold it will be in Maine in August, or how cold it will be as a move along. Any advice is much welcomed.

The temps in Maine are great in August. It can get rainy and cool into the 40’s at night but you have a good chance of temps in the 80s during the day and everything in between. The mossies and black flies just love it!! September in New England the temps start to drop off and by the end of the month you will start to see frost at elevation most mornings. September can also be a fairly dry month with beautiful hiking weather and no bugs.

I’ll speak up for the S.E. Presuming you’ll be hitting Tenn/NC/Ga sometime around December, expect mostly cool days (50’s) and cold nights (20’s). Of course, a passing front can push temps in either direction on very short notice. December remains typically dryer than the later winter months, so most days should be rain-free. But then again, I heard this is going to be a wet year (La Nina?, La Nino?). Good luck with whatever you find!
