Southbound clothing

Last question before starting. I’m thinking fleece vest, rain jacket, 3 socks, 2 shorts, 2 tees, 1 long sleeve, 1 rain pants, 2/3 boxers. My only concern is the possibility of cold weather in the north. Any suggestions? What have you other hikers taken for clothing?

If I were you I’d bring a wool hat and gloves at least until you get through the Whites. They don’t weigh much and could be life savers. Make sure you keep one of the pair of socks dry to sleep in.

I would ditch two pairs of boxers and put in a set of lightweight Polypro long johns. In the occassional nights when it gets cold you can sleep in them. It will add a few degrees to your summer bag. I have to agree with the hat and gloves too. Even in the middle of summer I have been camped up high in miserable weather and they made a big difference.

We’re not out of the 50s today here in Maine and that’s down south at sea level. You want thermals, top and bottom and I would sub the fleece vest for a long sleeve micro-fleece type. I use fleece socks at night to sleep in, never hike in, and alternate two pairs of socks for hiking. I also had “sleeping clothes/town clothes” consisting of a coolmax tank and nylon runner’s shorts with brief. Of your two pairs of shorts, one could be for sleeping. Every one is different. I echo the hat and gloves. I kept a hat my whole hike, it can add a lot of warmth on a cool summer night (which did occasionally happen last year in VA), mine is fleece, weighs nothing.
