I am currently using Spenco inserts in my Montrails. They are working well for me. I have the backpacker version, whatever that’s called. I used Superfeet in my old boots and I liked them, too. Both did what the original insoles did not do, give some extra cushioning on the bottom of the feet and some stability in the heel. I find that the Spencos have a better arch support then the Superfeet, but the Superfeet are better in the heel. They are similar on the ball.

Backpacker magazine did a piece on boot inserts in one of their recent issues, March through June this year. THey reviewed all of the popular brands and styles. Their article was helpful because it pinpointed the best features of each insert and told which ones were best for each area of the foot and type of conditions.

I’ve used them for decades in all my shoes. Daily in my work shoes. One pair went the whole AT in my Asolo 535 boots. I use the green covered “work bootish?” style although they do have a backpacker model now. Cut to fit. Oh, I see they’re all green covered now. Anyways, the link has a few models. I get them at the local grocery store but online may be a little cheaper.

I have used Spenco inserts in running shoes but used Superfeet for hiking. The claim for Superfeet is they act like an orthodic in that they conform to your foot. Do Spenco’s act the same? Superfeet really gave me a lot of cushioning which helped a lot on rocks. I’m anxious to try the Spenco’s to compare.
