Spending the night near springer

So my dad is getting things in gear and it looks like we’ll be staying a night or two as close to Springer as we can get. Can anyone recommend any hotels near there? Also is there anything to do? Movie theatre?

Oh, and then I’ll need directions to the trailhead. Not the approach trail, mind you, the real trail  Gracias.

how far from the trailhead are you willing to stay?
i can give you directions to the trailhead, but i don’t have the directions on me. check back tonight or tommorrow…or you could go to www.georgiatrails.com and search for springer mountain…maybe it will help answer any questions you might have.

I stayed in the lodge at Amicalola (might want to book soon as I’m sure it get’s booked up by loads of thru’s). It cost $85 but was very nice indeed. 8 mile hike to Springer after breakfast. The approach trail is’nt as bad as people make out.

Or the Len Foot Hike Inn, accessable from the Approach trail about 4 miles from Springer. I’m sure the Georgians will tell you otherwise if I’m wrong. Good luck.

If for some reason you cannot find accomodations at the lodge at Amicalola or the Len Foot Hike Inn, there is a privately owned campground less than 1 mile from Amicalola Park. It is called “Under the Hemlocks” and they have cabins as well as campsites. Great people and cheap - less than $20 per night for the cabins and about $10 for the tent sites. My friend and I stayed there last spring while on a road trip. (We didn’t realize you can’t camp in No. GA before June at any of the Parks)

Lodging near the start should be listed in Wingfoot’s Handbook or the Companion. If you haven’t already bought one or the other, then you should.

I stayed in the town of Dolonega(sp), GA. There were a couple of chain hotels there I believe. I also stopped at the National Forest headquarters downtown and got very good directions to the trail from a wonderful women who worked at the desk. Fair warning though, she was a talker. Good luck and great hiking.

I would stay at the Len Foote Hike Inn. I myself have been there many times and it’s a wonderful establishment with full accomodations. it’s cheap. it’s in the woods. and it’s only 4.4 miles from springer. but if you’re looking to drive directly to springer it’s on USFS 42. Go to the visitor center at Amicalola and have the people at the desk give you driving directions. They’ve given them to me many a time.
