Spinger Mtn. to Newfound Gap

Ok my plan is to leave April 17 and hike from Spinger Mtn. to Newfound Gap in the Smokies. I have never been backpacking before. I am 53 in pretty good shape.
Do you think I am biting off more than I can chew or do I stand a chance of doing it?

You can certainly make the trip, no question about it!! And you’ll likely have the company of others in your same shoes. Do yourself a huge favor though and avoid the rookie mistake of carrying too much gear. You don’t need nearly as much stuff as you probably think you do right now. A manageable pack will make every aspect of the adventure better. If you need some help with gear selection, just ask (or email me) and plenty of help will be on the way.

Allow at least 3 weeks and bring a warm sleeping bag and good raingear.

i’m 54 and have done this trek a couple of times…you shouldn’t have a problem… but do take seriously the advice that steamer and matt have offered here…‘lighter’ is better, but it DOES get cold in the southern apps in april! (and wet, too!..especially in the smokies!)…don’t let cold and wet stop you, though!..you’ll have the time of your life!

I’m 64 and did that section and a bit more (up to I40) last year. Did that 245 Miles in 24 days. Took my time and enjoyed. Read my journal…
