Sponsorship for AT hike?

I know it's bad form to even think about sponsoring, but I'm having trouble making enough money for rent and have saved little - though I want to hike the AT this coming March.

I hiked through four states in 1 month in 2010 and it was the best experience of my life. I only had 300 then and I really made it last. I wouldn’t need much in terms of sponsorship, but I do need a little help this year.

I am a writer and I wrote about my experience in length from '10. Would this help my securing sponsorship? I know some people do it through a blog, but I don’t know if they’re expected to keep it updated while on the trail or do it all afterwards?

I guess I don’t know much about sponsorship and would really appreciate any information on it.

Thanks!

Andy Skurka's website has some good info on getting sponsored:

The harsh reality is that it is very difficult to get sponsored.

The AT is a great and wonderful journey. But, it is a journey done by many people and not “sexy” enough for most gear companies, outdoor companies, what-have-you.

Unless you are doing something truly unique (e.g. a REALISTIC attempt at breaking the AT speed record), you may find the road to sponsorship rather difficult.

I don’t know what your work schedule is like currently, but it may be better to pick a part time job, save some money and put off the AT until you have the financial resources to enjoy the hike in a style most comfortable for you.

Good luck!
