ok, so i have decided to spend my senior spring break on the A.T., i think i’ll be the only one from my class choosing this option, haha, well anyway i am planning on starting north from fontana dam on march 27th, i decided to not go all the way to springer because i am more familiar with the smokies area, so i have a few questions, what kind of weather will i see, how many thrus/other people will i run into, what kind of shelters along the way, i plan on doing 7-8 days on the trail, what is a realistic/convenient finishing spot, and any other advice, anything is greatly appreciated, thanks

Clong- That sounds like a great spring break! You will definitely see some thrus on the hike. For detailed info on the trail, I would buy a thru-hiking guide book like the one at www.trailplace.con or www.atc.org. There’s not much fishing in on the smokies AT, because it is generally high ridges (the water runs off the sides). You might be able to find a hole off a side trail. Check the maps, and fishing regualations on the maps.

Weather is really hard to predict. But in the Smokies, you should always be ready for cold and rain.

I hope your serioritus isn’t too bad, because you might get swept up in the hike and miss graduation!

Time to get new glasses. You can finish at Davenport Gap if you start at the south end (Fontana).:boy

Be prepared for snow even. We were there last year the end of Mar. beginning of April and had everything from no coat needed, to enough snow to close the road down at Newfound Gap for a couple of days. Make sure you have enough food if you can’t resupply in Gatlinburg due to road closed. Instep crampons would have been nice too. Have a ball. We saw lots of thrus.
