I am going on a hike from Springer Mt to Erwin, TN…a distance of about 340 miles on the AT…I am a pretty fat man weighing about 275 pounds. and i was wondering, does the majority of weight that a hiker will lose come off in the first month? how much weight do you think i could lose hiking from springer mountain to erwin, tennessee on the appalachian trail. Thanks. Any firsthand experiences with weight loss in the first month of an AT hike would be appreciated. thank you.

By the way, I plan on taking four weeks, possibly five, so do the hike from springer-erwin…just for your info. and the 275 pounds isn’t mostly muscle, its mostly fat, and im a pretty short guy so you can imagine what i look like haha.

I went from Springer to Erwin in 2001. I’m also a shorty and at the time had some weight on me. I was with a buddy, we took our time and made it in about four weeks. I think I lost about 15 pounds on that trip. Even after a short hike you can change your metabolism, the key is to keep it up afterwards, otherwise the weight comes right back, and then some.

Everybody is different in how they respond to the physical activities such as hiking. I would imagine that you’d lose 10 to 20 pounds. If you are really out of shape, I suggest that you go real slow at least the first week. Listen to your body and slowly increase the mileages. Also, remember that “weight loss” can be deceptive; you want to gain muscle and muscle weigh more than fat so weight-wise, you may not see much in the scale while you become leaner. In any case, have a wonderful time on AT.
