Is it possible to stake a tent along the JMT, or do I need a free standing model?

You can stake a tent using stakes or rocks. Rocks at higher elevations, but make sure your lines are long enough to wrap a good sized rock. Personal preference - a free standing tent is a lot more convenient. I’ve used a North Face Slick Rock - 4lb / 10 ozs - but this year have a new Big Agnes Sarvis 1+.

I used a Henry Shire tarptent two years ago and never had a problem staking the tent. I have the smallest tent in case you are interested in looking to purchase. Mine weighs in at 20oz. Good luck out there.
