Starting in early to mid July SOBO?

Hey everyone!! I need some consul for my near future. I hiked the AT in 04 SOBO (with Pride!) and the stars have aligned for me to hike the PCT. I will hike the distance, but I’m wondering which would be more advantageous and I would like some opinion. I would have no issue going SOBO, but that doesn’t have to be…Help…

This year it would be quite feasible to hike SOBO in mid July. Most years that would be fine. But, you’ll need to hustle to get through the Sierra before the snows come and you’ll probably have to deal with the wild fire season in SoCal. I wouldn’t recommend starting NOBO in mid July. There will be 0-3 SOBO hikers, so be prepared to spend a lot of time by your self and without a supporting trail culture.

I’m not sure how much issue I would have being alone on a SOBO, but if I go north, I know it will be a flip flop…I was just fishing for thoughts on the advantages of each and where a NOBO would start for the flip spot.

Nobo flip flop with a Mid July start - consider starting somewhere between S. Lk Tahoe and say…Castella. July 15th I was at Donner Pass heading NOBO in 06 - probably about in the middle of the crowd at that point.

Castella / Dunsmuir / Mt. Shasta City has a certain advantage of a NOBO flip start point in that its ON I-5, so getting back there via bus should be pretty straight forward (and its not too far from the airport in Redding). Donner Pass can be a good point as well as Reno isn’t far away (or head up I-80 from Sacramento). I suggest travel logistics should point you to your start point.

Suge nails it in that you’ll have to light the afterburners to beat the fall snow in the Sierra. The upside of a straight SOBO (if you can handle, or in fact thrive on the alone time) is that there is no competing interests of your hiking buddies to slow down for an extra town zero, or match pace with them, etc. Town stops and zeros are all business - get in, get chores done, get out and get hiking again.
