Starting Partner 2003

Hello out there. I’m planning on hiking the AT in March 2003 (starting southbound) and am looking for a hiking partner til at least Maryland or Pennsyvania. I have friends who are going to join me along the way once I hit the Mason-Dixon Line.
I live in Philly right now but am originally from New England and have hiked mostly in the Whites of NH, I have never hiked below Maryland. I would ideally like to meet beforehand and maybe do a weekend hike or a ski trip.
Anyone who’s interested can contact me at: j.l.manzella@att.net

Starting SOBO in March? Just beware that this is an unorthodox start date for SOBO thru-hikes. You’ll need a special winter climbing permit for Katahdin and excellent winter camping/treking skills to get through the northern states. Snowshoes and perhaps crampons are in order as well. Considering we’ve already been dumped on in the Boston area significantly with snow, I think you can expect a large snow pack in the North Woods and the Whites. Traditionally SOBO hikers start after the black fly season in late June through July. My wife and I left June 12th finishing November 5th on Springer. However, March is a traditional start date if not a little early for NOBO hikers.

Hiking partners… Find them when you’re out there. I met too many partners who met up for the trip, had different personalities, hiking speeds, endurance levels, philosophies. You’ll meet plenty of people on the trail to keep you company who you’ll mesh with much better than some stranger. There was a group of four who started the same day we did. College/HS group who didn’t know each other too well. After a few weeks they had split into groups of two, then separated all together. None of them finished. Too much stress to deal with in what should be a stress free corridor.

After reading your post a second time, I think you are really going to be northbound and would like a partner for the unfamiliar southern portion of the trail. If so, I agree with Grimace. There will be plenty of other hikers with you down south. I started in February and I still had people around me a lot. We sort of attracted each other being so few out there. You will find people to hook up with. If you start with a less than best friend you will probably split up. But you will enjoy the southern parts of the trail. It is really more remote at times and the off trail people are great. There is a lot of trail magic and plenty of hostels and cheap motels. The northern portions of the trail are great too but the southern portions are just different. Of course maybe I’m partial toward them being from SC.
