I am planning on starting the PCT next year. What is the best way others have found to get from the San Diego airport or train station to Campo, CA 51 miles to the east at the Mexican border?

Contact one of the trail angels in SD. They will pick you up at the airport, take you to their home for the evening if you want, and take you to the trailhead. http://www.pcta.org/planning/during_trip/services.asp

OK … work out whatever you can with trail angels!

However, if all falls through and you are on your own:

  1. Take Bus #992 from the airport terminal to American Plaza. Board NLT 6:30 am.

  2. Take Eastbound Orange Trolley from American Plaza to El Cajon Transit Center. Board the 7:30 am or earlier.

  3. Take Bus#994 from El Cajon Transit Center to Campo, CA.

Plenty of time to get good miles in that day, Day 1.

May have to overnight near airport if fly in late. Or there is a Relax Inn and Suites near El Cajon Transit Center. Get there on flight night and just catch the Bus#994 the next morning. You can check routes yourself at this link.

Good luck! Happy Hiking.
