Still baffled aye? Try this. Drops need to be sent a minimum of ten days before you get there. Send them Priority. Send them to places you plan on staying; ones other hikers liked if you don’t know which eg; Neels Gap, Hiker Hostle, Fontana (no food), Blueberry Patch, Hiawassie or Helen, Elmer’s etc. Places you walk right by so you don’t have to hitch just to get food. Put the basics in them that you can stand to eat, candi bars, tp, and for the love of hiking mix up the choices. You’ll get so bored with noodles and sauce, sauce and cheese, cheese and rice, rice and beans. We learned that the beauty of towns is variety. We threw out half of our drops just because we couldn’t eat one more home made meal. I’m stressed about whether or not to bring the wine and brie next week to the Smokies. Damn high class Bramble, this is just another big shopping trip for her. Mail me if you wanna chat again, its cool.

There are really very few places where it’s a good idea to have food mailed to you; unless you’re on some sort of special diet (vegan, kosher, no-salt, etc.) or unless you plan to prepare and dehydrate all of your food ahead of time, it’s really very easy to re-supply from stores and shops while en route as opposed to relying on maildrop re-supply. This also ensures that you’ll actually WANT the food that you’re eating; many folks who purchase and box up all of their food in advance discover later on that they’re tired of, and in some cases have come to HATE the food that they bought----but they’re stuck with it. Then, they either end up hating their food for months on end, or they give a great deal of it away and buy new stuff that they actually like; this is a waste of time and money.

For some more information on resupply/shopping, etc., you might want to check this out:
