Strange question

I know this is going to sound funny, but are there any places along the trail that we could play volleyball? My buddy and I love volleyball and if we know of places that have it, we’ll pick those places to stop at as opposed to others. Thanks

Get a rope and make your own volleyball court, when in need improvise!

C-Giddy - love the question! I’m a coach and player up in Massachusetts, planning on hiking NOBO 3/2004 with my brother who also plays. I know friends up here will come visit and set up a net, but I figure I’m packing a ball for a few miles and watching my skills fade the rest of the time.

Dude, that’s awesome. That’s dedication. Are you seriously thinking about bringing a ball along? I was just hoping to find a place or two that had a court and ball already. When in March are you starting?

I had a similar question/fear about not being able to play basketball for 5 months. There were a couple places but once you are out there it really won’t be a concern of yours. You’ll be so focused on the great people your with and gettin to K.
Altho there was the time at Laurel Creek when i played hoops alone in the rain while my friends all laughed from a nice warm dry cabin…

I understand that A-Train. Rain wouldn’t stop us from playing if we found a ball and net. Hell, it hasn’t stopped us before.

After I returned to California from my section hike in the summer of 2001,I was wishing I had taken a volleyball.I would have drawn a face on it, and named it “Wilson” similar to what Tom Hanks did in Cast Away.
I also love Volleyball, and wished that there had been somewhere to play along the trail.
Good luck on finding a place to play, along the way.

3100 cu. in. pack. 530 cu. in. volleyball. Not to mention 10 oz of weight and the fact that you can’t store things inside the ball very well! Hmmmm…

My bro and I are planning on 3/12 as a starting date - how 'bout you C-Giddy? I’m thinking a ball might find it’s way into my bag for parts of May and June. I imagine A-Train’s right though - so many other things to do, people to see and miles to walk while out there.

My buddy and I are planning on leaving the first of March. Less than two weeks ahead of you, so it’s possible we’ll run into each other at some point.

I applaud your vigor but especially in the beginning of the trail; there isnt much flat ground to play volleyball on. One idea might be to bounce box the volleyball to yourself so you can have it at towns (then you could even send a net), and when you are taking your 0 days; play a nice game at the park in some nice grass. alot of the shelter areas are littered with mud (in or after rain) rocks; sticks; bones from collapsed thru hikers from previous years and other things that might cause you to end up in an ER with a hike threatening injury caused by volleyball. I was tired enough when I got to shelters at night that i didnt want to do much; although i do admit i carried a nerf football for a short while; just to have something to do. playing catch on top of those big balds or by the side of the rode waiting for a hitch can pass the time.
