Stratton or Peru?

I've recently moved over here from the UK. My father (late 70's but fit) and brother are joining me for a long weekend hiking in late June. I am trying to decide between two days around Stratton peak/pond or Big branch and Peru Peak.

Does anyone have any advice? Also, just how much do I need to worry about the bugs? I’ve heard everything from horror stories to casual shrugs.

Stratton pond has a flat path though the woods between the pond and the parking lot if your Dad gets a little tired. Nice swimming hole too.

Stratton as Stealthblew noted has a good loop hike you can do with the AT going over Stratton Mtn and the Stratton Pond trail that gets you back to the general area of the parking lot. There are also some good side hikes you can take from that location. When you get to the pond, if you are going to the tenting area, take the southern route around as the northern side tends to be wet. There is also a large shelter there is you decide not to tent.

The area tends to be on the busy side, so if you are looking for something a little more remote Peru is a better choice but not as pretty a place as Stratton Pond.
On the bugs, black flies can be an issue until sometime in July (depending on the season). Do yourself a favor and get some head netting just in case.

Thanks a lot, both of you. Really helpful. I think that Stratton gets the vote.

And I will definitely be getting head nets!
