Stumpknocker's Cell Phone Warning

This may be late for some of this year’s hikers, but I wanted to make everyone aware of a problem I’ve found with the new LG Env I am now using.

I journaled last year with an older and larger model of the LG Env and although not perfect, it was generally easy to use and worked well. That Env went through more rough stuff than I would expect any cell phone to live through.

I now have the newer model LG Env. It is a more streamline phone which is nice, but I found when I was typing a picture/text that this phone is MUCH slower accepting the typed units.

The phone is limited to 1,000 letters and spaces when sending a picture/text. That’s how I sent in my journal entries last year. I would normally send five picture/texts…totaling about 5,000 units for each day’s journal entry, from that day’s walk to my transcriber and she would copy and paste them in the right order on my Trail Journal site.

I could work with that okay…it just made a little more work for Mrs Gorp, or when she couldn’t post my journal, Hammock Hanger would take over. Those two girls didn’t have much to do anyway. Ha!!

There is a problem with the new LG Env. When I was typing a picture/text the other day, I noticed that as I got maybe 400 units typed, I was typing faster than the phone was accepting each unit or letter typed. It kept getting slower and slower accepting the units typed. I would have to stop typing and let the phone “catch up” with my typing…and I’m not really that fast at typing. I would get three or four words ahead of the phone.

My advice…I would look for a better phone if any of you are planning on sending in your journal entries with your cell phone this year.

I would have posted this on Whiteblaze too, but my New Year’s resolution was to NOT post on Whiteblaze for the rest of 2009. That site gets addicting and I find myself sitting with my laptop, spending WAY too much time talking about walking on Whiteblaze, when I should outside playing.

CELL PHONE WARNING!..the first thing that flashed through my mind was ‘dwight’ on nbc’s ‘the office’, pitching his cell phone over the wall after receiving a ‘warning from the cia’ that he had been ‘compromised’!!! :^)

but now i realize you didn’t intend for us to pitch our cell phones…ALTHOUGHHHHHHHH…

Thanks for the update Stumpknocker… I will still call this weekend so we can catch up and get your ideas of which phone I should get before my hike.

Stumpknocker, Have you added memory? You can increase the memory via the expansion memory slot {supports microSD (up to 2GB). I know added memory really speeds up pc’s. The enV2 comes with 64MB and you can add I think up to 2GB which is a huge increase. The jury is out as to whether added memory will help you but it’s a thought.

Steady On…I did add a 2GB memory card. Actually, I took the 2GB card I had in my original LG Env and switched it to the new LG EnV2.

Not sure what LG did to their newer model, but I would not use it on a thru like I did last year. There has to be phones out there that will work, but I have no experience with any others.

I can only say that after the experience I had last year with using my phone to type and send in entries to my transcriber, I would NOT use the newer model EnV2.

I know I was too late posting this for NedtheFed because he already purchased the newer EnV2. I’m posting this so there won’t be others dissappointed with that phone.

For any that don’t know…I used the older model LG EnV last year and was able to send in my journal entries and pictures almost daily until I hit Maine. I had cell service in Maine, but not the data service needed to send my journal in.

I am used to the PocketMail but realize that pay phones are getting harder to find.

How do you type on a phone? I know the keyboard is a standard qwerty but do you type with one finger only? use a stylus? use a pencil eraser? How long does it take you to type a journal entry? Can you insert paragraph breaks or does your wonderful Mrs Gorp do that for you?

Sorry for all the questions but I am seriously considering a changeover.
