Sun shower - Pacific Crest Trail

They had a fabric sun shower at the store and also one of the traditional plastic ones. How long does it take to warm up a sun shower in the summer? I was considering the pocket shower (the fabric one) because it was light and small and I wouldn’t have to go rent a hotel to take a warm shower.

(oh i’m just teasin’ you a bit, piper!)…honestly, carryin’ a shower isn’t a bad idea!..our friends and mentors, hatman and happy feet, ALWAYS carry one (and taught us to do the same!)…it is basically a plastic bladder (such as what is fashioned in those ‘boxed wine’ jobs) and is nestled into a lightweight nylon bag with a handle for hanging…the ‘spigot/showerhead’ can be purchased from campmor for about $5, (but we trim the length on ours)… as for WARM?..rarely! (unless you stop by a public restroom on your way back into the woods and are willin’ to carry heated tap water for a little ways)…BUT, you’d be AMAZED at how a cold shower actually serves to warm you up! (guess it gets the circulation going! ha!)…favorite ‘shower sites’?..awwwww!..i’ll just let you discover that on your own!

It usually takes two to three hours to warm up a bag of water, depending, of course, on the intensity of the sun. I think they would be of limited use for daily showers, I usually hike into the evening, so it wouldn’t have time to warm up. For cheap zero days, it would be good.

When I hike into an area and make a base camp, it worked very well. However, if hiking to a different campsight each evening, I doubt there would be enough sun left to heat it up. The few times I used one, the shower was actually almost too hot…

I was thinking for zero or nero days, not daily showers. Perhaps I could hide my shower near the trail, dash into town for a quick resupply, then come back and have warm water for a shower. I suppose a cool shower wouldn’t be half bad, either, especially when it’s hot out. Come to the first creek after Hat Creek and a cool shower would feel mighty fine.

I got a gift certificate so maybe I’ll get me a pocket shower. Ooh, so exciting.

What if you strapped the sun shower on top your pack and let it heat up all day, then shower at an early dinner? (On the trail I usually eat dinner mid-day anyway.) I’ve used a plastic sun shower in campgrounds - nice warm water after about 3 hours. Mine has a clear side to let the sun in and a black side to warm it up.
