I believe that after reading the stories of those hikers murdered by that manaic In Ga, that we all should band together and take back our trails from those who wish to do harm to us. Buddy up with others that you can trust and look out for each other. You see some thing that does not look right, then let some one know. Let's all be safe out there this coming hiking season.

The trail use to be where i felt the safest and still is. But who can really tell. You use to take someone with you in case of a fall or unexpected accident. Now more than ever we should have someone we trust with us and this is a shame. Unfortunaly i feel journalist should keep there journals somewhat behind just for there safety.

As a female who often hikes alone or with my dog, I feel as safe on the AT, or any trail, as I do downtown. Just as you would normally, keep an eye out. If you see something that seems a little "off", say something! I hiked in 2006 and had two experiences with strange men. I outran one (still not sure if he was chasing me!), and told another he was making me uncomfortable. Then I told other hikers of my experience. I guess whatever happens happens, we can be as careful as makes us comfortable. Just be careful!

I have commented before on safty and still feel safer on trails where ever I'm hiking . That said , I have learned something from the latest events. Being old doesn't insure safty and I have been more trusting of someone with a dog. I will be more careful of hikers comming up behind me and i will continue to use more causion near road ways. I shall continue to hike with my dog as I have always had a dog companion, I avoid any trail that doesn't allow dogs.
