Doing a short VA section in mid April to early May and will be using a HH Asym hammock. Any suggestions for substituting a sylnylon tarp for the HH Asym tarp? Planning on hanging the tarp separately from the hammock ridgeline.

Check out SGT Rock’s info on the net at hikinghq.net/hammock/hammock.html --very informative. Also, when I googled Hennesy Hammock I notice 2 videos about them on YouTube. My husband Ed Benton began his thru hike 3/23 and slept cold the first night because he did not have an underquilt, slept in a 20 deg bag with an accordian windhshield sunblocker. He’s slept in the shelters the last 2 nights and still seeing unmelted snow around, brrrr.

I had a HH with the Asym tarp and never liked the set up because the tarp did not cover enough area. I often thought of ditching it and buying a larger tarp. I have since purchased a Clark which has a much larger tarp. Its great for protection from blowing rain and gives a large enough protected area that two people can comfortably sit under it during a rain storm. One of the things I did not like about the HH is that if you were at camp during a rain storm you had to get in it for protection due to the relatively small tarp area. The HH did have other features that were better then the Clark so I find them about a tie as far as a sleeping system.

I’ve been using and am very happy with my MacCat tarp:

Also, if your looking to go larger, Speer has a couple nice tarps:
http://www.speerhammocks.com/Products/Tarps.htm
And finally, JacksRBetter has a couple nice ones, but they do not seam seal the seams like MacCat and Speer do:

I’ve used the JRB 8X8 tarp, nice, except it’s not really 8X8 and isn’t seam sealed. JRB is haveing a close out sale on them, you can get one for $50 now. I’ve since sold it and replaced with a MacCat Deluxe. If you want more coverage, then the Speer WinterTarp or JRB 11X10 look nice.

Thanks folks. All good info I can use. I have been reading SGT Rock’s journal and will check out his other address. I have an Etowah Outfitters 8 x 10 onhand. Not sure it is large enough.
