Yup, used a tarp on the Colorado Trail. Works fine, just be sure you’re comfortable setting it up to handle some decent winds on occasion. Interestingly, I noticed that the vast majority of the time when we camped there were ample trees for setting up a hammock as well :).

I was introduced to tarping on the CT a few years ago while hiking a few sections with a CT ThruHiker. It is a wonderful (and lightweight) shelter strategy for the CT. Quick pitch, quick dry, etc. Just make sure you set it up to outlast some pretty severe gusts, and orient the tarp with the prevailing breeze. You’ll be much happier. For those of us who find bivys too claustrophobic, a tarp is a great alternative. Hike on, TrailGuy

How about a Tarptent? I just placed an order for a Rainbow for my September CT hike. Total weight: 2 pounds, plus it’s freestanding which is good because you can’t hammer stakes into those Rocky Mountains.

Only thing I don’t like about it is that name. You know what types fly a “rainbow” flag.

During my CT hike I hiked for a few days with two people useing the Virga. Seemed to work out well for them. To be honest my tent was the only freestanding tent I saw during the entire hike. Don’t remember anyone having trouble with there stakes. During a very windy evening near Twin Lakes my tent decided to maytag out of the campsite with my gear inside no less. Picked up some pretty good speed before I finaly caught it. :tongue

Bob, I think you meant “their stakes.” “There” is directional; “their” is possessive.

On the other hand, it would have been correct if you had written: “Don’t remember anyone having trouble with THEM there (or thar) stakes.” :oh

If you use a tarp or a footprint you ought to consider bringing ample amounts of bug spray. I found there to be lots of ants in the Northern sections of the trial.

You don’t always need to use stakes with a tarptent. any combination of rocks/trees/other will work.
