I will be hiking the Smokey Mountain National Park section of the AT. Could anyone direct me at some places to locate a ride back to my car once Ive completed my trip?

And

how busy will that portion of the trail be in the middle of may?

Thanks a bunch

Refer to www.appalachiantrail.org for a shuttle list that is listed in order from south - north along the trail. The trail in the Smokies will be busy that time of year. You will not spend any nights alone in a shelter at that time. Also, the shelters are required along the trail and for the non-thru hiker must be reserved throught the national park service office. You can reserve shelter space up to one month, I think, in advance and it would be wise to do so. I don’t know the phone number or web site, but I’m sure you can google Great Smoky Mountains National Park and find it.

I too would definitely recommend reserving shelter space at least 2 weeks in advance if not more for this time of year. Some shelters will be fine, but others like Spence Field, Icewater Springs, Silers Bald, and Double Springs Gap can fill up quickly sometimes, especially weekends. There is a specific backcountry reservations number that you should be able to find on the Smokies part of the NPS.gov website. Sorry, I don’t know anything about a shuttle. Let me know when you plan to finish. I might be in the area around that time and I’d help you out if I could.

yeah, I have the number, I have done extensive hikes in SMNP but never at this time of year and never a hike that didnt loop back to my car. I will be ending my hike probably the 21st of may or the 22nd. It should be fun.

Thanks to all you trail Lovers out there that makes a site like this possible.

Mr. P:
I suggest that you park at the end of your hike and get a shuttle to your put-in point. That way you aren’t pressured at the end of your trek to rush to meet a scheduled pick up. Usually so much easier to arrange a convenient time to meet your driver at the beginning of your trip, too.
