Last I looked the offical end to end trail from Cape Regina to Bluff was due to open in Dec 2010. The website at New Zealand Tramper has rough notes on the route. When it is launched I an sure it will rapidly become a world famous classic long distance walk. Some of the south island high altitude passes are a mite “technical” for the non mountain climber. Probably allow 4-5 months end to end with a fairly narrow time window to thru hike it in a season I’d Guess

This looks outstanding! We were in NZ in 2003, saw both islands, and still consider it the most beautiful place we’ve ever been (that includes Europe, the UK, South America,Central America, 48 of 50 states including Alaska and Hawaii, Canada including Nova Scotia). You only get 6 months on a visitor’s visa so I’d say split the hike up to avoid the time contraints of being forced to finish before the 6 months is up - do one island and then later on come back and do the other island. Get the 6 months for each visit and use the remaining time to just enjoy NZ.
