Temporal Gulch Trail closure

According to the USFS website, Temporal Gulch Trail in the Santa Ritas is currently closed to the northwest of where the AZT route continues north toward Walker Basin. The AZT file for TOPO! also includes the stern warning “Do NOT follow!” - although this may be more to avoid navigational blunders for AZT-hugging purists.

In any case, I’m looking at the option of following this trail into the Santa Rita high country, which the AZT avoids, but cannot find any specific information about what’s wrong with Temporal Gulch Trail that would’ve resulted in a closure.

Anyone know? Monday’s a long way off to chat with Smokey when you’re in crunch mode with the maps in front of you.

I couldn’t find the report of the closure, but I would imagine any issues with the conditions of the trail are from the effects of the 2005 Florida Fire. I had not heard that that trail is closed, and when I was in the area last April, there weren’t any signs saying the trail was closed.

Happy Planning!!

Smokey sez:

"Temporal Gulch trail is open again following the 2005 Florida Fire. We’ll look into updating the USFS website description (removing the little red asterisk, as seen here: http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coronado/forest/recreation/trails/trail_list.shtml ) "
