Tent Bags - Appalachian Trail

Recently picked up a Zoid 1.5 but noticed that if I leave it in its bag it takes up more space then I'd like in my pack (Aether 60). Any disadvantages to just placing it loose in the pack (or just sticking it in a rubbish bag)? Can't really see anywhere to put it on the outside of the pack.

Try a Compression stuff sack if you cant get strapes on the outside of the pack. Thats what i would do but im no expert..wait and see what others say first.

I've got an Aether 60 too. On the bottom of mine are a couple of thin black straps. Not sure what they're for. There are also a couple of grey straps on the back near the bottom. I made some straps of my own out of some 1" webbing, some triglides, and ladderlocks, and I loop these through the black and grey straps, one on each side, and attach my tent to the bottom of my pack that way. Probably not what those straps were intended for, but it works pretty well.

I do not like stuff sacks that things are stuffed into so tightly that they become hard packages. I know it is a few extra grams of weight but I have both my hammock and my sleeping bag n bags that are slightly larger then needed. It is easy to get them in as there is extra room. The main reason is that it allows the item to spread out and form to the space available in the pack. It actually allows me more room in the pack. I use a GoLite Speed if under 25 pounds, and an Aether 60 when above. Sue/HH:girl

I had an Aether 60 too. When my pack was full of food I used the bottom quick release straps for my tent. When I had room my tent went in the pack. Aether 60 usually offers plenty of room for everything. When you have big food drops like the whites and 100 mile wilderness, you may need to put the tent on the outside.
